Lady Bird - dir. Greta Gerwig : A Bit Disappointing!!

This is for the 30 Day Film Challenge on my insta because I went on a massive rant and there wasn't enough space... 😂 Okay I didn't hate this film, and I also don't really have a fave genre. But I do love edgy coming of age films. However, of all the edgy coming of age films, this is my least favourite - mostly because it's not actually, in my opinion, a coming of age film. The whole point of a coming of age film, to me, is that the character grows and learns something. Which I really don't feel that Ladybird/Christine did. Maybe it was the point, but I'd rather watch a film about literally any of the other characters in the film (apart from the Timothee Chamoeleoej however his name is spelt, because I don't need more edgy white boys) because they all have something more interesting. Which is get the whole grasping at uniqueness, hence the changed name, but like, give me any other character please. That's another thing that bugged me, this f...

5 Shows and Films with Good LGBT Representation

LGBT representation (and representation in general) in film and TV is so important!  Representation allows people to see characters they can relate to, it can create role models, and allow people to understand themselves better, or feel less alone. Representation can also be really effective in breaking down stigma! And of course, realistic content show reflect real life!!  Anyways, here's 5 films and shows you can watch for some great LGBT representation!  SEX EDUCATION  created by Laurie Nunn  (18+) Netflix  This show was ahead of the game in its representation of LGBT+ characters and the way it dealt with a variety of issues. Special mention to Ola, who was pretty much the first pan character I've seen and Florence who was the first (canon) ace character I've ever seen!  BROOKLYN NINE-NINE created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur  (15+) Netflix  Both Captain Holt and Rosa discuss their sexualities and the issues that c...

Me and Earl and The Dying Girl - dir. Alfonso Gomez-Rejon

I did not expect this film to be so heartbreaking. Which is really odd given its title. I guess I just figured it's predictability takes away from its impact. I was incorrect.  I watched this film in three sittings, which in an odd way, I think made it better. I bloody loved that it wasn't a love story.  And of course, I loved the terrible film references.  I think the squirels at the end were surprisingly beautiful, and I think she really suited the name Rachel.  The whole premise and the way it was presented was very John Green and cringey, but I've decided that teen films should be cringey. Because so are teens.  My Rating: 7/10 I'll probably watch this again, and maybe read the book

Five Feet Apart - dir. Justin Baldoni

*spoilers* This is the sort of film that you know exactly what's going to happen when you read the blurb. Which is true. But alongside that, it did a lot of stuff that I really didn't expect. So props to it for that!  The dying girl with survivor's guilt. Her dead sister, dead best friend, dead boyfriend. V poetic.  Yeno what I hated though. Why the heckin whoosh was she obsessed with babies?? Like I get there's probably a thing there to do with communicating your love to babies through touch and innocence and life and whatever. But did no one else find it really weird that she just spent her time staring at people's newborns??? If that was a guy people would be creeped out and you can't convince me otherwise. Like, Barb thinks it's reasonable that she's fallen asleep in baby room or whatever it's official name is, meaning it's probably happened before. I find that really odd!!!!!!  Beyond that, great film, v sad, v entertaining.  My ...

April and May Watching Recommendations

Lockdown has been a great opportunity to spend time watching loads of random crap, which has been great! Here's a few of my favourite things I've watched over the past two months, sometimes for the first time, and some of my faves. In no particular order…  Hollywood - created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan 8/10 - Netflix This show said gay rights. I don’t know what I was expecting when I started watching it, but oh my god I love it. It does unfortunately feature Darren Criss, who I’ve recently discovered that I don’t stan. I recommend going into it blind, for no reason other than I did and I enjoyed it that way. What We Do in the Shadows - directed by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement 9/10 -Amazon Prime The funniest film I’ve ever seen. That’s all I’m saying  High School Musical: The Music: The Series - created by Tim Federle 7/10 - Disney+ Okay, so I know you’re judging, but give it a chance. It’s a lil slow to start but it’s go...

Easy A - dir. Will Gluck

I really don't know how I feel about this film… There were some good moments, and a whole lot of other weird moments… We were supposed to believe a 23 year old was 17, but that's no different from most teen flicks to be fair.  I like what they tried to do at the end with her explaining that her sex life is no one else's business, and I liked that Lisa Kudrow was in it!! It just didn't sit right with.  Rating 5/10 It wasn't terrible! They had some good intentions! Left me feeling kinda uneasy though.

The Fundamentals of Caring - dir. Rob Burnett

(no spoilers)  “Pick a number between 1 and 3,500” The Fundamentals of Caring is heartbreaking and hilarious, my favourite type of movie! Some kinda interesting cinematography (by Giles Nuttgens), especially the shot from above of Ben on the bench.  It’s hard not to love Paul Rudd and that’s a major plus of that movie. It seems like the sorta movie that’s really predictable, and in a few ways it did kinda capture most of what I expected from it, but(!) it did also did a few things I wasn’t expecting! Did I have a rough idea of what happened to Ben? Of course, it’s obvious. Did I know it happened like that? No! So that was kinda interesting! When things went wrong, they very rarely when wrong in the ways you expect them too. It also has a cruel sense of humour that really makes you suffer for a laugh. I also really really love the scene with the cow.  I also very much enjoyed the pick a number thing. V creative. Good job.  Rating: 6/10 Not the most amazing...
